Our review:Item Description:The Toshiba 32A43 is a 32-inch TV with 750 lines of resolution and ColorStream Component Video Input. ColorStream Component Video Inputs allow the base broadcast signals to be displayed individually without being processed, which results in better picture quality and stunning color reproduction. 3-Line Digital Comb Filter separates the overlapping Y (brightness) and C (color) broadcast signals, which prevents color smudging and vibrating edges, and ensures sharp detail. Black Level Expander increases the black threshold level of an incoming video signal, which improves the overall picture contrast and makes images appear sharper and more three-dimensional. Picture Preference allows you to select a preset custom picture setting affecting contrast, brightness, and sharpness, which maximizes the appearance of the video or television content you are watching.
Amazon.com Item Description:Enjoy vivid, high-contrast pictures from Toshiba's 32-inch FST Black picture tube. Affordable, stylish, and loaded with features, the 32A43 makes a great upgrade to a DVD or satellite-based home theater. The set's FST Black picture tube offers a flatter screen than Toshiba's popular Blackstripe tube, further reducing ambient light reflections and provides finer dot pitch and increased resolution. This tube increases the screen's viewing angle and improves linearity over standard tubes.
The 32A43's three-line digital comb filter and vertical contour correction further enhance resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).
The set performs stereo audio and SAP (second audio program) reception, the latter of which is often used to broadcast an alternate-language track. The 32A43's 5-watt (each) stereo speakers derive a heightened sense of separation from their double-baffle speaker enclosures. A ColorStream component-video input provides the ultimate picture quality from interlaced component-video signals; standard composite-video inputs accommodate all DVD players and most other video sources.
You get two sets of rear AV inputs (one with S-video) as well as one set of front AV inputs for easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console. A rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver. The 32A43 also features color-temperature control, V-chip parental controls, a sleep timer, and a glow-in-the-dark universal remote control.
With the power return feature, the TV will automatically assume its last power state following a power outage, turning on again if it lost power while you were watching.

Excellent television
This TV is an excellent value, just as Consumer Reports described. It has brought new life to DVD movies, and it makes my so-so analog cable signal look as clear as digital cable! 32" is the perfect screen size for my living room, where people sit 6-10 feet from the TV. All the inputs a geek could want are included, including component, S-Video, and front-panel A/V inputs. Some other reviewers have said it's necessary to calibrate the picture, but I think it looks terrific right out of the box. I'll try their suggestions, though, and see if I can squeeze out even more.

"Nice T.V. For the price"
The first thing I'd like to say is that this t.v. is a good t.v. for the price. However, before you purchase this t.v. or any t.v., think about the fact that High Definition t.v.'s are finally coming down in price. For a few hundred more, you can now get a nice deal on quite a few big screen H.D ready t.v.'s. The real question is, "Are you a T.V. fanatic" that loves movies and sports and are you extremely picky like myself. I bought this t.v. for two reasons.
(1) Low budget- just being honest!
(2) Quality- This is my second Toshiba television. I still have my first, which after 10 years, still has a beautiful picture and sound, and knock on wood, I've never had 1 problem with it. That model # is a Toshiba CN35D90. I had my reservations about Toshiba products because to be honest with you, there quality was less than what I am use to way back when. I have always been a big Sony fan (still am). I just recently gave my 27" Sony Trinitron to my nephew. That t.v. I bought in 1987, and it still has a better picture than half the new t.v.'s I've seen!
The bottom line with this t.v. model # 32A43 is, if you are on a budget or H.D t.v is not in your future, then by all means, buy this t.v. set. The factory settings for this t.v., your picture, sound, etc., should have some "minor changes" made to them. If you have read some of the other reviews, you may have noticed that a few of the reviews gave you settings using a program called "Video Essentials", and they gave you all the settings that the software came up with. Well, I tried the settings (just out of curiosity) and I'd like to make this point perfectly clear "all t.v.'s are not alike", however, after having a nice picture right out of the box, I changed all my settings based on the other reviewers who used the Video Essentials program. Long story short, (yeah right) my t.v. picture was absolutely horrible! The factory settings in general were okay but needed to be tweaked just a little bit. You "don't need" software to adjust this set or any set that I've ever owned, so please don't waste your money on software. I changed my settings just a bit and this is what I have come up with.
(1) Contrast= 60
(2) Brightness= 47
(3) Sharpness= 50
(4) Color= 50
(5)Tint= 0
Your next option will be to change (if you want) the factory set sound. This again is a matter of taste, as is the video settings, but I increased my audio settings to:
MTS= (STR)
BASS= 65
TREBLE= 75
BALANCE= 0
SURROUND= ON
Your next option is to change the setup menu. This should all be preset to English, and if you have a cable box or your using cable,then you'll want to highlight the "Cable" option. The rest are preferences for the v-chip, timer, demo, etc.
Next you'll come to the "Picture Preference" menu:
I set the Color Temperature to the "cool" setting, because I like a more natural less saturated picture. Again, this is my preference. Next you'll see options on the kind of picture you want to watch. You should keep this on the "memory" setting, which has saved all of your changes you have made.
The last thing I'd like to say is that if you do have a cable box with an RCA out feature, then by all means, use the RCA'S to connect to your "Video In" feature on your new Toshiba. Your picture quality, and sound will be significantly improved!
I hope you have found this useful, and I do hope you enjoy your t.v.!

Big Boy works good
I picked it up when my last TV started aging a bit. I didn't wish to spend the extra $$ for a flat panal screen and went with the older technology of this beast. Let me tell you it works plenty good. Sharp picture, saturated color, and plenty loud enough for any room . The drawback is its size. extremely big and heavy. My entertainment center shelves hold 250 lbs. so it wasn't a big concern as for weight and depth. My wife and I barely got it into position, but it's there and there to stay hopefully for the next 10 years. I use it with my Sony driven 700-watt 5.1 system and it really delivers fine. I actually purchased the 36 in. version for a few dollars more so it was even heavier than this behemouth. Toshiba quality makes this a good purchase. My Mom recently purchased this very TV and is happy with it considering her experiences with her RCA and Magavox televisions of yore.

Outstanding value, outstanding TV
I bought this TV to replace an 8-year old Sony XBR (orig price of $1500). This is the first non-Sony, larger than 20", TV that I have owned. I've never been a big fan of Sony audio components, but I have always liked their video products very much (thus my past brand-loyalty).
When my XBR started going out, I faced either taking it in for an estimate, or purchasing a new TV. Given the typical more and better toys logic, I immediately thought "ah, here's my excuse for HDTV". However, I just could not justify the price of a flat screen given the still-outrageous prices. Not wanting to lock myself into a non-flat panel HDTV, I decided to shop for an economical TV to "bridge" to an HDTV flat panel in 2-3 years when prices will most likely be more reasonable.
I surveyed the available 32" CRT's (my current entertainment system won't hold a larger TV :( ) and did the cursory review of Consumer Reports latest ratings. Initially, I was still a Sony shopper. However, given the reviews here, the Consumer Reports data, and the fact that I found this TV on sale for $340, I decided to give it a try.
My impressions? This is an outstanding TV at and outstanding price. It outperforms any of my prior TV's, even the $1500 XBR. In some ways this is not surprising since technology has advanced in the 8 years since I purchased my prior TV. But the improvement is two-fold, greater performance and much lower price.
Out-of-the-box, the TV looked good but still suffered from typical manufacturer's "cranked up" settings. I pulled out Video Essentials and started to work. There are really very few problems with this set other than, as one other reviewer mentioned, the TV doesn't have great ability to hold the black level constant. However, this is a minor concern. Once all adjustments were completed, the picture is steallar. Far better than any other TV I've ever owned. I have no idea how it compares to other manufacturers' TV, but I really don't see how any TV could be significantly better than this one.
As an aside note, my final settings via Video Essentials differ significantly from another posters here - showing not all TV's are identical. Mine were : Contrast 43, Brightness 34, Sharpness 28, Color 45, Tint 18, and Color Temp Medium.
I'm sure even the most demanding purchaser will be happy with this TV's performance. However, to get the most out of it, you really should put it through Video Essentials. If you don't have a copy, get one. You'll be able to use it on all future TV purchases, along with using it to fine tune and verify your audio system.

Exceptional Picture and Value....
I also can't say enough about this tv.. I was in the market
for a flat screen HD TV ready 32" or higher and looked and
did the research and waited and didn't rush. I had gone to
the stores and compared pictures and I always went back to this
Toshiba, its even got a screen that is pretty close to flat and bought it and I love this set and I saved hundreds
of dollars if I went to HD TV ready. Great Picture and value
for those looking for a reasonably priced TV with great credentials. It also ConsumerReports #1 rated 32" Conventional tv for the money
even listed slightly better than the more than twice as expensive Sony FD trinitron Wega V310 at over $900.00.
