Our review:Item Description:FUNAI is the world's largest volume manufacturer of VHS videocassette recorders (VCRs), TV/VCR combination models and TV/DVD/VCR combination models, and is among the largest manufacturers of DVD players.
Amazon.com Item Description:The Sylvania DVC865F Progressive Scan DVD/VCR Dual Deck provides the perfect hybrid solution for the serious movie enthusiast. With both a high-end DVD and equally feature-rich VCR, this unit will free space in your component stack and still let you enjoy your entire film library, regardless of format. The player reads DVD Video discs, DVD -R/RW discs, Audio CDs, CD-RWs, CD-Rs and also plays MP3 files.
The DVD player includes progressives scan. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The DVD player also includes a 3:2 pulldown feature that improves the image quality of film transfers. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.
VCR features include a 4 head HiFi MTS-SAP driver for superior picture and audio quality. The 181 channel auto set PLL MTS_SAP frequency synthesized tuner, when combined with the 1-year/8-event programmable timer, will record your favorite programs, something your stand-alone DVD player won't do. The unit also makes finding your favorite scene a snap. Use either the index and time search, or the two-step picture search to quickly locate the frame you want.
A host of output choices mean you can use whichever connection is most convenient or highest-quality. There's an RF (F-connector) in and out, for those really old TVs, and of course, standard composite A/V (RCA) jacks in both the front and rear for practically every other device. S-Video and component video output connect higher-end TVs, and digital audio output lets you send audio to most any home theater system.
With a great feature set for both players, a 44-key remote control and stylish exterior, this deck lets you play the latest DVDs and still enjoy those old-school tapes you carefully collected. Whether you're looking to upgrade your system to include a DVD player, or you need to replace a worn-out VCR, this combination unit makes perfect sense--and it only takes the space of one component.

Good Value
My experience with my DVD/VCR player has been very good. I wanted a unit for my bedroom that would have all the features I wanted, without being terribly expensive. This unit fits the bill. The remote in particular is great. All the most useful functions are right at your fingertips and are easy to find, even in dim light, since some buttons are red and some are shaded with dark grey. My favorite feature is the Resume Play, which allows you to pick up a DVD at the point that you stopped it, even if you turn the machine off. Many of your less expensive DVD players do not have that feature.
It has S Video and Component Video output available, but I found that the cables that come with the machine produce quality picture and sound. I would recommend this unit to anyone looking for a lower cost DVD/VCR combo.

Buyers beware!
This combo drive is pretty lousy in important places.
First off, the DVD drive. It will freeze during movies and click and bounce around inside the player. Sometimes it will stop clicking and start back up after a minute or more, but other times it will have to be totally shut off.
And secondly, the VHS player. It plays VHS movies fine except for some annoying problems. About a month after purchase the player started squeeling when fast-forwarding or rewinding. Now this might be only annoying, but it makes me question the quality of the machine considering it started one month after purchase.
Overall, the only positive feature is the abilty to watch local channels and VHS tapes. That is pretty sad, because this thing should do a whole lot more.
