Buyer Testimonials

Buyer's review: 5 out of 5 stars - Kindle works well, even in Iraq
I am a U.S. soldier currently deployed to Iraq, and my wife got me this for Christmas. I have to say, it is one of the best presents I have ever gotten. Considering the environment here, the Kindle performs above my expectations. I have had no problems with it for the 8 months that I have had it, through dust storms, unbearable heat, and dropping it from my cargo pocket or backpack. It's been a lifesaver at times (in the boredom sense!), when all the troops have had to sit around. I just whip out the kindle, and start reading. Yes, the wireless access doesn't work in Iraq, but it's still ridiculously easy to plug it into your computer and get a book. This little device comes with me to work every day, and a lot of my breaks are spent with a smoke in one hand and the kindle in the other. Yes, the keys are big and very easy to hit, but it feels like the kindle was designed purposefully like that so you can read one-handed. As for battery life, I charged my kindle to full just before I went on leave back to the states, and it lasted (no kidding) through the 7 hour flight to Ireland AND the 6 and a half hour flight to Atlanta. I finished two books on that flight!

This device is absolutely amazing, and I can see myself using it during any future deployments I am in. Thank you Amazon!

Buyer's review: 5 out of 5 stars - Became a way of life
No doubt by now you've read the various pros/cons.
I just figure when they work out some more of the details, I'll love the gizmo even more.
I've had mine for over two months now I guess. I've still not tapped into all the things I can do with it, still never even connected it to my computer. But for the things I have done with it, I'm quite content.
Including my recent innovative use while in an emergency room waiting area without my cell phone and wanting to contact my husband, going on a bulletin board I hang out and asking if someone would call him for me to let him know where I was. This prompted a "that thing has just paid for itself" from him.
I've emailed myself mapquest directions on gmail, put the whispernet on long enough to open the email, then turned it back off. The information is still there even when the kindle goes to sleep. As long as I don't go to something else, visit other reading material for instance, I can just wake the kindle, glance at my directions, and I'm good.
I've asked Now Now if an album I'm looking at in an antiques co-op was ever released on cd. It wasn't.
Okay, the reader. I love this. It has been a non-stop companion for me. I love being able to lay on my back to read, still having a hand free to lavish affection on one of the cats.
Though there's not enough magazine options for me yet, I like being able to flit from subscription material to a book I was reading. Or opening up a language reference guide I have in it to pass time in a diner until diner arrives.
I hope both the basic web and Now Now services remain. I utilize both and having these available was what prompted me to make the purchase in the first place.
My kindle helped me feel less stranded a few weeks ago when I was in a more media deprived situation for the week.
I love instantly having material. Browsing the kindle store might be a little too addictive for me at times, but I'll just have to read with even more hunger.
And, oh, you can read the most embarassing title you want, no one is going to see the cover of your book on public transportation! Not that I've done that. Yet.
I'm not a person who needs each newest toy. I'll more often ride out the newest technological advance until prices drop. Or until something just becomes too irresistible. The kindle fell into the latter catagory for me, and I'm glad I gave in.

Buyer's review: 4 out of 5 stars - Bought it for my wife
She loves it and that she doesn't have to carry multiple books. More and more titles added daily. Hope the price comes down, it is way overpriced for the technology.

Buyer's review: 5 out of 5 stars - Absolutely Amazing
I love this product. I couldn't love it more. It works great and just as I thought it would; and more! It's my new toy and I'm so excited to get digital books cheaper than real ones and to be saving trees. The only thing I don't like is the small selection of books available. However, more are added all the time and you can even request new ebook conversions.

Buyer's review: 5 out of 5 stars - Why I love my Kindle
Top 7 things I love about my Kindle:

1 - I can now read on the treadmill, elliptical and bike easily when at the gym. With the adjustable font size, large page turn button on the right and no need to turn a physical page I can even read while running on the treadmill not just walking. I just tap the page turn button which given it's size is an easy mark to hit and off I go. Some people have complained about the page turn buttons being too big and easy to hit, I'm glad I bought this model b/c if the next one has smaller buttons to hit it might affect my ability to use this wonderful device while on the treadmill. My workouts go by so quickly if I'm reading a good book that I sometimes run for longer than an hour before I realize I've gone over my target time.

2 - Instant access to the book you want to read. I find that I read books that are in a series so being able to have the next book download immediately after you finish the previous one is the coolest thing ever. No more waiting for the next book to arrive because the first one was so good you finished it in one day you can just keep going and going without missing a beat. The download speed is so fast it's beyond description, I've literally never had to wait regardless of book size. Usually by the time I can navigate back to my home page the book is there so it downloads faster than I can get to it.

3 - Multiple books in one small neat little package (and it keeps track of my place in each book!). I love to read and my interests are all over the place so I tend to read different types of books at the same time. Fantasy, History, Finance/Investing, Fluff, you name it so being able to pick what I feel like reading at that moment is priceless especially when traveling. Ever been stuck on a long plane ride with a book you just couldn't stand to read at that time and wish you had something else, the kindle solves that problem. It's a must have for anyone who travels by air on a regular basis.

4 - Adjustable font size. I know I briefly mentioned this in my top one reason but it deserves it's own mention. I have no serious vision problems so before I got the kindle I thought it was a neat feature that I would never use. Not true, I change my font size around to suit my situation, I use the standard size 3 font for most things but when reading in bed without glasses or contacts I find that if I bump it up to size 4 it's more comfortable to see. I also bump it up to size 6 when working out b/c this makes it easier to focus on the words while moving. This has allowed me to read my kindle while it's resting on the arm of my couch or on the counter, etc. because I can adjsut the font to make it easy to see no matter the situation.

5 - Book Samples - This is to books what the itunes sample is to music. Publishers don't realize how much this could help (or I suppose in some cases hurt if the book wasn't well written) the sale of a book. I can't even count the number of books that I have gotten hooked on and bought that I would have otherwise never purchased or tried. The sample is free and is usually the first chapter although one book gave me four chapters, which I read and of course by that point I had no choice but to buy it, I was already four chapters in at that point. With a sample there is no risk of shelling out $10 to $20 on something you might not want to finish once you start reading.

6 - Battery life is amazing. I bought the kindle for the sole purpose of book reader, I don't want music, web browsing (other than the book store) color, backlighting or any other features that I have on one of my fifteen other gadgets. Just like I wouldn't expect my paper books to function as anything other than a book, that's how I want my kindle to function. With that said I only turn the wireless access on when I want to browse for and download a new book so my battery lasts a really long time. I spent one entire weekend reading a really good book and several nights after for a total of 30 or more hours of reading and still didn't come close to killing the battery and that includes leaving it on one whole night b/c I fell asleep. I like being able to go away for a few days and not have to pack yet another charger to plug in somewhere.

7 - Book Price. I always buy my books, I never use the library and I rarely borrow books from others b/c I always forget to return them (I've been told that's called stealing). I also never really share the books I read with anyone else (few of my friends like what I read, I'm not selfish I swear). That being said everything that I have wanted to read that has been available for the kindle has been cheaper in some cases by more than half. You would think that I could cut back on my book budget but I just buy more books now.

I know a lot of reviews talk about the page turn buttons, the appearance, the file organization, etc. These things had me a little hesitant to be an early adopter but I'm so glad I did. I have read more since I got my kindle than I did before and it has been great. I rarely turn the tv on anymore because the kindle has made reading any and everywhere so much easier. Try holding a real book with a dog on your lap while drinking a cup of coffee and see if you are even able to turn the page, it's not possible but it is with the kindle.
