Buyer Testimonials
Average Buyer's Review: out of 5 stars

Buyer's review: 5 out of 5 stars - This printer is awesome
This is the BEST printer I have ever had. I am in the tech industry and have used a huge amount of HP lasterjets, Dell laser printers, inkjets, color lasers. This little Brother printer is my workhorse. I have had it for over 3 years and it never breaks down, never jams, never lets me down. It is the Toyota Camry of printers - it just runs and runs. I have purchased at least 6 other brother printers since and recommend this brand to everyone. All the 88xx models use this body style and paper path. Very good printer and at this price exceptional value.

Buyer's review: 2 out of 5 stars - So Annoying!
I read so many good reviews that I wonder if I am the only one that is having trouble with this machine!!? I use it primarily as a copy machine, and inevitably the pages get stuck time after time.......it has taken up to an hour to copy 10 pages due to having to open the back and pull out the paper that continually gets jammed! (not to mention all the paper waste!)

Buyer's review: 5 out of 5 stars - Still going strong two years later.
You can read my original review of this product from June, 2005. Two years later I have replaced one $25 hinge and toner, other than that the unit has functioned very well. It reports it has printed about 12,000 pages and I'm sure I've scanned about the same amount. No regrets about buying this product and it's still going strong.

Buyer's review: 5 out of 5 stars - Great machine that is reliable and trouble free!
After reading the other reviews I was inspired to write one of my own. This machine has worked flawlessly for me from the beginning. Never a paperjam, no problem with the fax software, full duplex printing and document feeder. Who could ask for more? I purchased the extra paper drawer so I have 1 for legal and 1 for letter (each holding 250 sheets) which means less shuffling of paper. My use is probably 70% printing, 20% copying, 8% faxing, 2% scanning.

My network has computers running Windows XP and Windows 2000. The software I use is primarily Office software and printing from the internet. The printer is shared on the network and, again, works flawlessly. No garbled fonts and I have never, ever needed to reboot the printer.

I'm searching now for a color model and am using the features and reliability of this machine as my benchmark.

Buyer's review: 3 out of 5 stars - Don't buy if you really depend on your printer.
I've had the MFC-8840DN for about 8 months now. I bought it because it packs a lot of features for the price, and the reviews I found were quite good. Overall, it's a decent printer for the price, but it's somewhat unreliable. The problems are tolerable in a home environment but I would not recommend this printer for a workplace.

It has two major annoying habits. First, some of the time it will act like you are using a font it doesn't understand, and just prints all the characters as blocks. If you resend the same document, without resetting the printer, it usually works fine the second time around.

The second problem is that sometimes after you send a job it will sit there with it's "working on it" light blinking and never actually prints. The only way around this problem is to power cycle the printer. There is a "job cancel" button on the control panel, but pressing it doesn't accomplish anything.

Neither of these problems happens tremendously often, so as long as I am not in a hurry and it is something that I can reprint, it is something I can live with in a home printer. I would not want to use this printer in a multiuser environment or anywhere that you need to count on a document printing the first time you send it to the printer.

One of the most annoying things about the problems is that there is no predictability to them. The same types of documents will work fine one time and fail another time. Both problems happen with multiple computers using various operating systems. All are printing across the network, so perhaps it works better if directly connected.

It also, as others have mentioned, pulls a lot of power. I have it on a 14 ga circuit which is probably 100' from the service entrance, and it dims the lights on that circuit when it powers on or when it wakes up. When I had it on the same circuit as my PC it would cause the UPS to kick in.

The toner cartridge, which is supposed to be good for 3500 pages, started complaining that it was empty around 1800 pages (almost entirely text.) It's currently at 2200 and still going, but will come nowhere near the claimed 3500 pages.

The bloated software package which you must install in order to use the remote-scanning features refuses to install correctly on one of my computers. It goes through the install but doesn't ever finish, and if you kill it the scanner remains unconfigured. Works fine on other computers.
