Buyer's review: - Solid Printer for Small Business -- Issues with Scanning Software
I have had this printer for about 9 months. Previously I used a MFC 9600 for four years. I print approximately 500 - 1000 pages per month. The only reason I bought the new one was the MFC 9600 was not compatible with Windows XP. The MFC 9600 provided bullet-proof service for printing, faxing, and scanning. (I do not use to receive faxes -- so can't comment on that function.) The paper feeder was especially impressive -- almost no malfunction. The MFC-8840D has continued to function with the same reliability -- with much greater printing speed. This is an outstanding choice for small or home-based business use. However, if you need to use this multi-function device for scanning, especially OCR, be forewarned. The imaging software that comes with the printer seems to be a downgrade from the earlier models. I found it clunky to use with very limited features. Unlike the earlier model, the scanning software does not have a feature that automatically detects page orientation for OCR. To upgrade the software would cost almost as much as the printer. I had to buy ReadIris Pro for $100, which I recommend. If you don't do much scanning this product is 5 stars.

Buyer's review: - VERY difficult to use / lots of errors!
I bought this MFC-8840D and installed software on one computer only to find out that the PC-FAX software does NOT work. You will have to use your Windows based FAX software with this. The scanner and copier work fine, and this works as a stand alone product fairly well. However, connect this to ANY computer running Windows and your troubleshooting fun begins.

Brother's ONLY answer is to re-install and re-boot the computer endlessly. Unless you want to try and figure out how to use Windows based fax software... and good luck with that. This thing is a piece of junk and Brother does not have support to fix your software issues.

Yes, I've been through all the documentation and logged multiple hours and calls to Brother's support line. They know me well.

Find a better ALL in ONE choice!!! This ain't it!!!

Buyer's review: - Brother MFC-8840D Is a Great Workhorse Printer !!!!!
This multi-function device is very versatile.
Max Resolution (BW) 2400 x 600 dpi - clean, sharp documents
Black Print Speed 20 ppm - fast, no waiting for that report.
Fax - excellent
Scanner - haven't tried but you can't beat a flatbed scanner.
Copier - Included - Excellent copies.

Brother puts out another workorse printer.
Its reliable, quiet and does what it claims to.
I would have given it 5 stars if it had wireless capability.

If you don't need wireless, then get this printer.

Buyer's review: - Great Machine & best Deal in my book
A real workhorse !!! Had it for about a year now (my last Brother lasted about 3 1/2 years)
Does all my printing, copying, faxing & scanning for my home based office (full time Mo-Fri). The scanner could be a little faster but it's easy to use and the print & copy function is quite fast.
It's small enough so it can live on top of my 2 drawer filing cabinet. Best deal for the money. Love it !!!

My teeth fell out of my mouth when I saw this printer working. Words cannot describe how outstanding this machines is! Don't even consider looking at any other printer, this one is it! If I knew this printer was going to work flawlessly I would have easily paid double!! Buy now, don't worry be happy !!
